CVE-2026-98988 Linux CVE debrief

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's namespace handling has been addressed. The open_tree(OPEN_TREE_NAMESPACE) system call creates a new mount namespace from a copy of the tree at a given path. An unprivileged user can create a user namespace first, then use this call to create a new mount namespace. The copy follows the rules of a detached bind mount. Without AT_RECURSIVE, only the mount itself is cloned and its children are left out. With AT_RECURSIVE, unbindable mounts are skipped. This can lead to exposure of covered mounts in the new namespace.

Who should care

Defenders responsible for Linux systems, especially those with unprivileged user access, should assess exposure and apply patches to prevent potential vulnerability exploitation. This includes verifying Linux systems for exposure to unprivileged user namespace creation, restricting unprivileged user access to sensitive systems, and monitoring for suspicious mount namespace activity. Security teams and vulnerability management teams should prioritize patch

Why it matters

Defenders should prioritize verifying and patching Linux systems to prevent potential exposure of sensitive mounts due to the Linux kernel's namespace handling vulnerability.

  • Verify Linux systems for exposure to unprivileged user namespace creation
  • Apply patches to prevent potential vulnerability exploitation
  • Monitor for suspicious mount namespace activity

Technical summary

The Linux kernel's namespace handling has been updated to keep covered mounts covered in OPEN_TREE_NAMESPACE. An unprivileged user can create a new mount namespace, potentially exposing sensitive mounts. The fix involves updating the open_tree(OPEN_TREE_NAMESPACE) system call to properly handle mount namespace copies. This change ensures that covered mounts remain covered, preventing potential exposure of sensitive information. Linux kernel maintainers have addressed the issue with specific commits. Affected systems should be reviewed for exposure and patched to prevent potential vulnerability exploitation.

Defensive priority

Defenders should prioritize verifying and patching Linux systems, especially those with unprivileged user access, to prevent potential exposure of sensitive mounts.

Recommended defensive actions

  • Verify Linux systems for exposure to unprivileged user namespace creation
  • Apply patches from Linux kernel maintainers
  • Monitor for suspicious mount namespace activity
  • Restrict unprivileged user access to sensitive systems
  • Review compensating controls for exposed systems while remediation is scheduled and verified
  • Check relevant monitoring, detection, and logs for exposed assets that need extra review
  • Track exceptions, retest remediated assets, and close the item only after evidence is documented
