CVE-2026-9199 equalizedigital CVE debrief

The Equalize Digital Accessibility Checker – WCAG, ADA, EAA and Section 508 compliance plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 1.42.1. This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with author-level access and above, to dismiss, ignore, or restore accessibility audit issue records belonging to posts they are not permitted to edit by supplying an issue from their own post as an authorization token to affect matching issues across the entire site.

Who should care

Administrators of WordPress sites using the Equalize Digital Accessibility Checker plugin, especially those with author-level users, should be aware of this vulnerability and take immediate action to protect their sites.

Technical summary

The vulnerability exists due to insufficient authorization checks in the plugin. An authenticated attacker with author-level access can exploit this by passing largeBatch=true on a dismiss-issue request referencing one of their own post's issues, causing the handler to bulk-modify all site-wide accessibility issues sharing the same 'object' value — including those belonging to administrator-owned posts.

Defensive priority

High

Recommended defensive actions

  • Update the Equalize Digital Accessibility Checker plugin to a version beyond 1.42.1.
  • Restrict access to the plugin's functionality for users with author-level access and above.
  • Monitor for suspicious activity related to accessibility audit issue records.
  • Implement additional security measures to protect against unauthorized actions.
  • Review compensating controls for exposed systems while remediation is scheduled and verified.
  • Check relevant monitoring, detection, and logs for exposed assets that need extra review.
  • Track exceptions, retest remediated assets, and close the item only after evidence is documented.
