CVE-2025-71426 edgelesssys CVE debrief
CVE-2025-71426 debrief: Contrast before 1.4.1 Coordinator Impersonation via Unauthenticated Recovery. A recovering Coordinator does not verify the seed supplied by the recovering party, allowing an attacker to stand up a rogue Coordinator and impersonate a workload owner. This vulnerability affects Kubernetes deployments using Contrast before 1.4.1, allowing an attacker to impersonate a workload owner and recover arbitrary workload secrets. Defenders should verify the root CA certificate of the Coordinator and upgrade to version 1.4.1 or later.

Who should care
Kubernetes deployment owners and administrators using Contrast before 1.4.1 should assess exposure and verify the root CA certificate of the Coordinator to prevent impersonation of workload owners and recovery of arbitrary workload secrets. Defenders should also upgrade to version 1.4.1 or later to mitigate the vulnerability.
Why it matters
CVE-2025-71426 allows an attacker to impersonate a workload owner and recover arbitrary workload secrets in Kubernetes deployments using Contrast before 1.4.1. Defenders should verify the root CA certificate of the Coordinator and upgrade to version 1.4.1 or later.
- Impersonation of workload owners
- Recovery of arbitrary workload secrets
- Compromise of workload integrity
Technical summary
In Contrast before 1.4.1, a recovering Coordinator does not verify the seed supplied by the recovering party. An attacker can stand up a rogue Coordinator whose manifest passes validation but whose secret seed is attacker-controlled. If network traffic is redirected from the legitimate Coordinator to the attacker's Coordinator, a workload owner can be impersonated when they either set a new manifest without comparing the returned root CA certificate against the existing one (the default behavior of the contrast CLI) or verify the Coordinator without comparing the root CA certificate against a trusted reference.
Defensive priority
High priority for Kubernetes deployments using Contrast before 1.4.1
Recommended defensive actions
- Upgrade to Contrast version 1.4.1 or later
- Verify the root CA certificate of the Coordinator
- Monitor for suspicious activity in Kubernetes deployments
- Review compensating controls for exposed systems while remediation is scheduled and verified
- Check relevant monitoring, detection, and logs for exposed assets that need extra review
- Track exceptions, retest remediated assets, and close the item only after evidence is documented
- Confirm whether affected product deployments exist in managed environments and assign an owner for follow-up
