PatchSiren cyber security CVE debrief

CVE-2026-86147 Apache Software Foundation CVE debrief

Apache bRPC vulnerability allows remote file creation and truncation, and unbounded profiling duration. The vulnerability affects Apache bRPC versions less than 1.18.0 and allows remote attackers to create directories and truncate/overwrite files with the privileges of the server process, or to hold the process-wide CPU/contention profiler for an arbitrarily long time. Defenders should assess exposure and prioritize patching to prevent potential impacts, including remote file creation and truncation, and unbounded profiling duration leading to potential resource exhaustion.

Who should care

Defenders responsible for Apache bRPC deployments should assess exposure and prioritize patching to prevent remote file creation and truncation, and unbounded profiling duration. This includes operators, platform administrators, vulnerability management teams, and security teams who need to verify affected versions, assess exposure, and remediate vulnerable systems.

Why it matters

Defenders should prioritize patching Apache bRPC versions less than 1.18.0 to prevent remote file creation and truncation, and unbounded profiling duration. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to create directories and truncate/overwrite files with the privileges of the server process, or to hold the process-wide CPU/contention profiler for an arbitrarily long time. The evidence from the CVE record and source item suggests that this vulnerability has the potential for significant impact, but further verification is needed to determine the full scope of affected systems and potential exploits.

  • Remote file creation and truncation
  • Unbounded profiling duration leading to potential resource exhaustion
  • Potential for privilege escalation
  • Need for verification of affected versions and remediation

Technical summary

The vulnerability in Apache bRPC allows remote attackers to create directories and truncate/overwrite files with the privileges of the server process, or to hold the process-wide CPU/contention profiler for an arbitrarily long time. This is due to the builtin /flags service allowing gflags carrying a validator to be modified at runtime via ?setvalue=. The bvar/mbvar dump path gflags were registered with an accept-anything validator, allowing remote attackers to repoint the dump path and create directories and open/truncate files at attacker-chosen locations.

Defensive priority

Defenders should prioritize patching Apache bRPC versions less than 1.18.0

Recommended defensive actions

  • Patch Apache bRPC versions less than 1.18.0
  • Restrict access to the builtin service port
  • Monitor for suspicious activity on the server
  • Review compensating controls for exposed systems while remediation is scheduled and verified
  • Check relevant monitoring, detection, and logs for exposed assets that need extra review
  • Track exceptions, retest remediated assets, and close the item only after evidence is documented
  • Confirm whether affected product deployments exist in managed environments and assign an owner for follow-up

Evidence notes

The CVE record and source item provide details on the vulnerability, including its impact on file creation and profiling duration. The evidence from the CVE record and source item suggests that this vulnerability has the potential for significant impact, but further verification is needed to determine the full scope of affected systems and potential exploits. Defenders should verify affected versions, assess exposure, and prioritize patching Apache bRPC versions less than 1.18.0.
